Digging in Hartford County

Hartford County has 29 towns and cities: Avon, Berlin, Bloomfield, Bristol, Burlington, Canton, East Granby, East Hartford, East Windsor, Enfield, Farmington, Glastonbury, Granby, Hartford, Hartland, Manchester, Marlborough, New Britain, Newington, Plainville, Rocky Hill, Simsbury, South Windsor, Southington, Suffield, West Hartford, Wethersfield, Windsor and Windsor Locks.

The Connecticut River splits the county into two unequal parts, with the Farmington, Scantic and other rivers feeding it.

Connecticut has had no county government since 1960, so permits go through the town, not the county. Each of the state's 169 towns has its own inland wetlands agency, and work that affects a wetland or watercourse needs its permit before it starts.

Connecticut requires a Call Before You Dig request (811) at least two full working days before anyone digs with power equipment. When you hire a contractor, the contractor makes the call, and the utilities mark their lines.

On our jobs, we file the 811 request ourselves before the machine starts.
