Digging in Middlesex County

Middlesex County has one city, Middletown, and 14 towns: Chester, Clinton, Cromwell, Deep River, Durham, East Haddam, East Hampton, Essex, Haddam, Killingworth, Middlefield, Old Saybrook, Portland and Westbrook.

The ground runs mostly level along the Connecticut River and the coast, and turns to gently rolling uplands away from them.

Connecticut has had no county government since 1960, so permits go through the town, not the county. Each of the state's 169 towns has its own inland wetlands agency, and work that affects a wetland or watercourse needs its permit before it starts.

Connecticut requires a Call Before You Dig request (811) at least two full working days before anyone digs with power equipment. When you hire a contractor, the contractor makes the call, and the utilities mark their lines.

On our jobs, we file the 811 request ourselves before the machine starts.
