Digging in West Hartford

The west side of West Hartford runs along the Metacomet Ridge, a trap rock ridgeline that includes Talcott Mountain and the Metropolitan District's reservoirs. Trout Brook runs through the middle of town.

In West Hartford, the Town Plan and Zoning Commission acts as the Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Agency, and the Town Planner is the wetlands officer. Work that affects a wetland or watercourse needs its permit before it starts.

A building permit is needed for new construction, additions, demolition and pool installs. Applications go through the town's CityView online portal.

Connecticut requires a Call Before You Dig request (811) at least two full working days before anyone digs with power equipment. When you hire a contractor, the contractor makes the call, and the utilities mark their lines.

On our jobs, we file the 811 request ourselves before the machine starts.
